AT&T Unlocks Off-Contract iPhones This Weekend — April 8th

On Easter Day–this Sunday, April 8th–AT&T will give out-of-contract customers the opportunity to unlock their iPhone’s, effectively giving customers the option to go elsewhere once their contract has expired.

According to phonescoop, AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom has said that, “Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.” Since the original iPhone’s initial release five years ago, AT&T has chosen to keep all of it’s iPhone’s locked for only the company’s subscriptions.

This significant change in company policy allows for the first time customers to switch carriers without jailbreaking their iPhones. This means that any SIM card can be used with the device now, and this will no doubt affect the smartphone’s presence worldwide. International rates for travelers will effectively become a non-issue, as they will now be able to pick up a local SIM card when in another country. This will save iPhone travelers some substantial money and allow for better service when in other countries. It’s exciting news for the iPhone and a step forward for its users.
