Instagram Becomes Top Free App in Apple’s App Store

Diehard fans of the photo-sharing program Instagram cringed when they heard it was being acquired by Facebook for 1 billion dollars, but that hasn’t stopped the app’s popularity from growing. Today, Instagram became Apple’s most downloaded free app.

Despite Instagram’s success, many are still bitter and skeptical about the company’s new position under Facebook. Photo sharing has always been one of Facebook’s greatest appeals as a company, so it is no surprise that the social network would be interested in buying the app. Facebook founder and CEO has always spoken about the company’s interest in the sharing of photos online and “building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family.”

Zuckerberg’s motivations to procure the photo-sharing platform are not surprising, but the direction he will take the company are not so clear. He speaks of Facebook being “committed to building and growing Instagram independently.” This statement implies the company will not be integrating the app into Facebook, but it could likely be an effort to quell the worries of loyal Instagram fans.

Regardless of how you feel about Facebook or Instagram, the direction in which this narrative unfolds will be exciting to follow.
