How You Can Make Sense Of The Facebook Phone Rumors

In 2010 we first heard rumors about the possibility of a Facebook phone. Mark Zuckerberg quickly quashed the rumor by saying, “We’re not trying to compete with Apple or the Droid or any other hardware manufacturer for that matter.”

Two years later, a new report suggests that Facebook and HTC might be working together to develop a Facebook smartphone. The speculation is that the two companies are working together to created a custom Android phone and that we might see something by Q3 of 2012.

The mobile landscape has changed substantially since Zuckerberg put an end to the phone rumors. Given the direction of mobile computing, it’s not far off to see how Facebook could indeed be working on a smartphone, especially with a consistently impressive phone-maker like HTC.

It is important to remember that this is still just a rumor, but it is an exciting one that doesn’t seem to go away. Given the competition, could Facebook create a smartphone that would stand as its own?
